Hybrid ATV Gearbox

This was a undergrad project completed in Arts&Métiers ParisTech.

The goal was to create a device that link the gearbox and the 3 engines (one normal engine, and two electric motors) of an hybrid ATV.

Overview:

PROBLEM

This was a 6 month project, and we began with only a few indications like the maximum weight or the maximum space.

My teammates and me had to design an entire solution without knowing enough on it.
So we conducted research for about 2 months on existing solutions (like the Prius hybrid system), we benchmarked what we found and built a solution based on the best features found.

We began by sketching the most basic solutions the main functions of the device, and we improved it day after day to find the best one.

We went through many different design steps: we pre-designed, designed, took in consideration different features like the assembly, the maintenance, the cost, the feasibility and easiness to manufacture.

Our solution includes 2 multi-discs clutches controlled by electromagnet, 2 frames that contain 1 geared-shaft each.

We then study some critical parts with finite element method in order to validate or not the solution under given constraints.

SOLUTION

  • Design knowledge and experience

  • Team working experience

  • Experience in finding and comparing solutions

  • Experience in using CAD softwares

  • Knowledge about how to study parts with finite element method
